We love a good dose of H.P. Lovecraft around here, and seeing his work brought to life through manga is the kind of horror crossover we can absolutely get behind. Dark Horse is adding another volume to its Lovecraft line with The Outsider and Other Early Adaptations by Gou Tanabe, and the paperback is now up for pre-order ahead of its July 2027 release.

If you have been following Tanabe’s previous adaptations, including At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Over Innsmouth, you already know the man has a knack for translating Lovecraft’s unsettling stories into detailed, atmospheric manga. This time, the centerpiece is The Outsider, one of Lovecraft’s classic tales of isolation, identity, and the terror of discovering what lies beyond the world you know.

The story follows a solitary being living inside a decaying castle, with no memory of its origins and no real understanding of the outside world. Longing for human connection, it finally escapes its confinement, only to encounter a reality far more terrifying than the loneliness it left behind. Leave it to Lovecraft to make getting out of the house sound like a terrible idea.

Tanabe’s meticulous artwork and gothic atmosphere make this a particularly interesting pairing for horror fans who also enjoy manga. Lovecraft’s stories have spent decades inspiring filmmakers, artists, and writers, so seeing his cosmic dread and deeply unsettling themes explored through another visual medium is always worth a closer look. Manga gives these stories a different way to get under your skin, and Tanabe has already demonstrated how effectively his artwork can bring these nightmarish worlds to life.

The collection also reaches beyond Lovecraft, featuring Tanabe’s interpretations of Anton Chekhov’s The House with a Mezzanine, Maxim Gorky’s 26 Men and a Girl, and Ju-Ga. That additional material offers a look at his range as an artist adapting literary works from different backgrounds.

For fans of Lovecraft, manga, or horror art that rewards a closer look, this one sounds like a welcome addition to the bookshelf.

The Outsider and Other Early Adaptations is now available for pre-order through Dark Horse. If you enjoy seeing classic horror literature take on a new life through manga, this is one to keep on your radar.
