Zombies will always hold a big chunk of our hearts. No, not between their teeth, in the sentimental sense. They have been a constant presence in the horror genre for generations, ever since George A. Romero unleashed Night of the Living Dead on an unsuspecting world in 1968. From there, the undead have marched through countless movies, TV shows and video games, giving horror fans plenty of reasons to keep coming back to the graveyard.
Now, zombie and creature feature fans can add another piece of independent horror to their collections as Unearthed Films unleashes The Sky Has Fallen on Blu ray.
The film follows Lance and Rachel, two survivors of a devastating outbreak that has wiped out nearly the entire human population. Just when surviving the plague seems like it should be their biggest concern, the pair discovers something much worse. Mysterious black figures have begun collecting the dead and conducting horrifying experiments on their victims.
Rather than simply running for their lives, Lance and Rachel decide it is time to fight back. Their mission takes them into a world where the remnants of humanity are facing extinction from something far more sinister than a deadly disease.

Directed by Doug Roos, The Sky Has Fallen combines post apocalyptic survival horror with creature feature mayhem and a healthy dose of independent filmmaking ambition. The 78-minute feature is presented in English on a region-free Blu-ray, but Unearthed Films has made sure the movie itself isn’t the only reason to pick this one up.
The release comes loaded with supplemental material that digs deep into the making of the film, including a commentary with Roos and executive producer James Segars, along with 20 Years Later: Reflecting on My First Feature. Fans can also go behind the scenes with featurettes covering the film’s influences, including Asian cinema and 1980s genre movies, as well as pre production, principal photography, post production and recording the score.
And because horror fans love seeing how the monsters are actually made, the release also includes extensive looks at the special effects, monster creation, mask making and prosthetic application. The original theatrical trailer rounds out the collection.
There is something particularly fun about discovering independent horror that went all in on practical effects and creature work, especially when the filmmakers clearly weren’t afraid to swing for the fences. The Sky Has Fallen looks like another Unearthed Films release built for the horror fan who enjoys digging a little deeper into the genre.
The dead may have already taken most of humanity, but Lance and Rachel aren’t ready to hand over the rest just yet.
