A mysterious fire, a grieving family and a village full of people who cannot seem to agree on what really happened. Sounds like a pretty good recipe for a psychological horror movie.
Burning, the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival Gold Audience Award and Special Jury Award winner, is heading to DVD and digital platforms on Oct. 13, 2026, giving horror fans who missed its festival run a chance to experience the Kyrgyz village nightmare for themselves.
Set against a remote village where folklore and reality seem to constantly collide, Burning follows a family struggling after the death of their firstborn son. The grieving mother eventually disappears into the forest, while the arrival of the father’s mysterious mother adds another layer of unease. Then the family’s home goes up in flames, leaving the villagers to piece together what happened.
The problem is that nobody seems to have witnessed the same thing.
Three villagers recount the events surrounding the fire, but their stories continue to change, with each version offering a different explanation for the tragedy. Was the family cursed? Did grief become something more sinister? Or is the truth being buried beneath the stories the village tells itself?

Drawing from the fractured storytelling tradition of Rashomon, Burning uses conflicting perspectives to slowly unravel its mystery, creating a psychological horror story built around uncertainty rather than relying solely on traditional scares.
The film’s recognition at Fantasia, one of the world’s major genre film festivals, certainly gives horror fans another reason to keep an eye on this one. With its combination of folklore, mystery and creeping psychological dread, Burning looks like the kind of movie that could leave you arguing about what you actually just watched long after the credits roll.
