Summer is behind us, but that doesn’t mean camping in the woods needs to stop. And, of course, with camping comes horror. One film that has always stuck out in the “summer camp” subgenre of horror (trust us, there is one) has to be SLEEPAWAY CAMP.
It’s been talked about for years and has seen many fans fall in love with and admire the film’s leading lady, Felissa Rose (a friend of TD, by the way). And who could blame them? It’s a revenge flick with a crazy twist that, at the time, was downright shocking. Today, it’s just another news bite for your local news station.
Today, Scream Factory announced via its Instagram page that the full negatives for SLEEPAWAY CAMP had been found. And you know what that means? 4K UHD, baby! Time to get those s’mores and knee socks ready because we’re going to camp!
Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, 1983’s Sleepaway Camp follows cousins Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) and Angela (Felissa Rose) at summer camp as they navigate bullies, relationships, and their fellow campers. When murders begin occurring around camp, a number of suspects emerge, eventually leading to one of the most shocking and unexpected endings in horror movie history.
Sleepaway Camp has already seen a number of home video releases, from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray, so longtime fans likely own at least one version of the movie on physical media. Still, 4K fans will appreciate the opportunity to experience the film with a new restoration.

With an upgrade like this, there are a few things we’re particularly interested in seeing. We’ve watched the HD versions of the film, and there are areas where the blacks and darkness are key to the experience. Some of those scenes seem a bit washed out, potentially revealing the killer before the film’s ending. There are also a few plot holes that, thanks to 4K, viewers might notice a little more clearly while watching.
We’ll keep you updated on this new 4K release and bring you the full details once they drop, as usual. You know you’re just as excited as we are to see Judy (Karen Fields), the films main bully of Angela, be a total bitch in 4K. It’s gonna be glorious.
