After everything Johnny Depp has been through over the past several years, it is damn good to see the guy back on the big screen and clearly having some fun again. Depp already has Ebenezer lined up for later this year, and if you happened to be at San Diego Comic Con, you may have even caught him while he briefly appeared outside the storefront for his offices that were created.
Now Lionsgate is giving us exactly what we want: more Johnny Depp.
The studio just dropped a spooky-as-hell trailer today for his next film Day Drinker, and this looks like one hell of a party that’s gone seriously off the rails. Depp seems to be leaning hard into the charming, unpredictable character he’s played so well over the years, and there is something about watching him stroll into a situation, knowing damn well he’ll probably make everything worse, that just feels right.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: In DAY DRINKER, a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.
We have seen Depp go completely off the rails before, particularly in Sweeney Todd, where he proved he can bring plenty of darkness and madness to a character without losing that strange charisma that has made him such a memorable screen presence. Day Drinker looks like it could give him another opportunity to play in that territory.
Directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Zach Dean, Day Drinker comes from Thunder Road in association with 30WEST and Media Capital Technologies, with IN.2, Nostromo Pictures and Baby Door also involved in the production. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, Zach Dean and Nathan Kahane serve as producers.
There is also something pleasantly spooky lurking underneath the whole thing. Day Drinker is being listed as HORROR on IMDB and the fact that Depp used the term “Ghost Story” in the trailer has us hoping for a spooky good mystery that gets bloody quick.
Johnny Depp playing a suspicious stranger on a boat with Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz involved? Yeah, we are absolutely sitting down for this one.
