We had a feeling this was coming. With Christopher Nolan‘s THE ODYSSEY bringing renewed attention to Greek mythology, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood started looking toward the ancient world for its next wave of projects. Now, it looks like Disney is getting in on the action with a live-action film centered on one of mythology’s most infamous monsters: MEDUSA.
According to a report from Deadline, Disney is developing an original MEDUSA movie with Michael Montemayor, who worked on the upcoming live action TANGLED, writing the first draft of the screenplay.
The project is being developed by Dwayne Johnson‘s Seven Bucks Productions, with Johnson producing alongside partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Matt Smith is also attached as a producer through Electro Corduroy Entertainment.
Before anyone gets too excited about seeing The Rock take on the role of a mythological monster, Johnson is not currently expected to star in the film. He’s producing the project, though that could always change as development moves forward.
Details surrounding the story are being kept under wraps, but the film is reportedly being described as a unique take on the Greek mythological figure.
For those unfamiliar with the legend, Medusa is one of three Gorgon sisters, alongside Euryale and Stheno. Unlike her immortal sisters, Medusa was mortal, and her most infamous ability was turning anyone who looked directly into her eyes to stone. Her story is perhaps best remembered by movie fans through the classic 1981 fantasy adventure CLASH OF THE TITANS, which featured one of cinema’s most memorable encounters with the snake-haired creature.

There is certainly plenty of potential in bringing Medusa’s story to the big screen, particularly if Disney decides to explore a different side of the character rather than simply retelling the familiar story of Perseus and his quest to defeat her.
And we have to admit, there’s something amusing about Dwayne Johnson producing a movie about a character who turns people into stone. After all, he spent years building a career under the nickname THE ROCK!
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what direction Disney takes with this one. No director, cast or release date has been announced, but we’ll be keeping an eye on this project as more details emerge.
