After loving every gloriously gothic minute of Interview with the Vampire, watching Lestat step out from Louis’ shadow for The Vampire Lestat was exactly the kind of beautifully dysfunctional vampire drama we wanted.

The Vampire Lestat, the third season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire, is heading to Blu ray, DVD and digital on Nov. 2 through Acorn Media International. The release comes after a season that transformed Anne Rice’s immortal troublemaker into something we had never quite seen before: a vampire rock star with an ego the size of a concert arena and several centuries of emotional baggage to unpack.
And because this is Lestat we are talking about, naturally he decided the best way to deal with his feelings was to put them into music, get onstage and make the entire world watch.
Sam Reid returns as Lestat, delivering the swagger, arrogance, vulnerability and outright chaos that make the character such a fascinating creation. The series picks up with Daniel Molloy’s Interview with the Vampire having become a bestseller, leaving Lestat absolutely furious about the way Louis portrayed him. Rather than quietly stewing over it like a normal immortal, Lestat decides to tell his own story through a glam rock tour.

That premise gives the season an entirely different flavor from the first two seasons. Lestat travels from city to city with his band while using his music to explore the experiences that shaped him, including his relationship with his mother Gabriella and his connection to Akasha, the ancient vampire who stands at the center of the mythology that is about to become even more important.
Of course, anyone familiar with Lestat knows that giving him a microphone and an audience is probably not the safest idea. As his popularity grows, so does his influence over vampires and humans, contributing to an increasingly dangerous expansion of the vampire population known as the Great Conversion.
Reid is joined by Jacob Anderson as Louis, Assad Zaman as Armand, Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy and Delainey Hayles, with Jennifer Ehle joining the story as Gabriella and Sheila Atim appearing as Akasha. The performances are a huge part of what makes this adaptation work because the show understands that Rice’s vampires are not simply creatures lurking in the darkness. They are dramatic, damaged, deeply emotional immortals who can spend centuries carrying a grudge.
Lestat, naturally, carries several.
The home video release comes with more than five hours of special features for fans who want to dig deeper into the production. And there is even more good news for those of us who were already wondering where this beautifully twisted story could possibly go next. AMC officially renewed the series for a fourth season at San Diego Comic Con, but it will arrive under a new title: Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned. The season will shift the spotlight toward Akasha, played by Sheila Atim, with Hannah Moscovitch taking over as showrunner.
That means the Brat Prince may have just finished his latest chapter, but the Vampire Chronicles are nowhere near finished with us.
For Anne Rice fans, longtime Interview with the Vampire devotees and anyone who simply enjoys watching an immortal narcissist turn several centuries of trauma into a rock concert, The Vampire Lestat is one hell of a ride. And honestly, we would expect nothing less from Lestat.
