There are places on Earth that humans were never really meant to explore, and perhaps none are more unsettling than the vast world hiding beneath the surface of our oceans. We have mapped more of the surface of the Moon than we have explored the deepest parts of our own oceans, and that fact alone is enough to make you wonder what might be lurking down there. The deeper you go, the more hostile the environment becomes, with crushing pressure, complete darkness and creatures that look like they were designed by something with a particularly twisted imagination.
Now Netflix is taking us into those dark waters with its upcoming limited series Below.

Josh Hartnett (30 Days of Night, The Faculty) finds himself with a very serious sea monster problem in Below, a six episode limited series arriving on Netflix October 8. The streamer has released the full trailer, and while it doesn’t exactly give away the creature lurking beneath the waves, it does offer plenty of glimpses at the aquatic chaos waiting for us.
The trailer spends a considerable amount of time reminding us that Hartnett’s character is having a really, really bad day, but there are enough flashes of destruction to suggest that whatever is down there isn’t particularly interested in staying hidden. Netflix is keeping the creature itself largely under wraps, giving us only brief glimpses and no real look at what we’re dealing with. We do learn one particularly important detail, though: whatever this thing is, it emerged from a melting iceberg. Apparently even the ocean needed its own version of Encino Man.

There also appear to be some supernatural elements mixed into the creature feature, with strange occurrences piling up as the trailer progresses. By the time things completely fall apart toward the end of the footage, Below looks like it could be a pretty entertaining descent into whatever nightmare is waiting beneath the surface.
Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a Newfoundland fisherman struggling to protect his family while trying to preserve a livelihood that is slowly disappearing. When his son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), becomes endangered, Calvin joins forces with marine researcher Fonda, played by Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil, The Turning). Together, they investigate the mysterious creature terrorizing the local community while uncovering the hidden history of their island.
The series was created by Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy), and if there’s one thing the trailer makes clear, it’s that whatever is happening beneath those waters probably isn’t going to end well for anyone who decides to go looking for answers.
Below premieres in its entirety on Netflix October 8.
