As horror fans, we can spot bad gore a mile away. We understand that budgets get tight, cuts happen and filmmakers have to get creative, but when the special effects do not look convincing, even practical effects can take a beating from horror fans.

WOUNDS takes that idea and turns it on its head, putting a horror obsessed special effects artist at the center of a psychological thriller that explores what happens when artistic obsession starts pushing beyond the limits of morality.

The film will make its world premiere at this year’s Screamfest in Los Angeles, now in its 26th year, adding another intriguing title to an already impressive lineup of genre films.

Starring Jack Kilmer (The Nice Guys, Palo Alto) and Paris Jackson (One Spoon of Chocolate, American Horror Stories), WOUNDS follows the dangerous intersection of creativity, obsession and ambition. The film was shot entirely on 35mm, with filmmaker Ron Krauss describing it as a love letter to independent horror and citing influences including Brian De Palma, David Cronenberg and John Carpenter.

The cast also includes Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), Lambert Houston (Resurrection Factor), Renata Notni (Zorro), Richie Radichi (My Best Friend’s Dead) and Rufus Dorsey (Ali).

For a movie centered around a special effects artist, the decision to shoot on film feels particularly fitting. There is something wonderfully old school about a horror movie that embraces the physical craft of filmmaking while exploring what happens when the artist becomes consumed by the work.

WOUNDS was produced by Ron Krauss and Ira Houston, with Chung Dick, Thomas Carroll, Sam Shen and Jason Sun serving as executive producers and Marvin Cheng as co producer. The screenplay was written by Ryan Leeder, Joshua Courtade and Krauss.

We’ll be excited to see this flick on the big screen thanks to Screamfest.
