Found-footage horror has grown from a once-unusual filmmaking approach into a familiar part of the genre, and there are still plenty of unexplained mysteries waiting to inspire the next nightmare. Wild Eye Releasing is heading into the backroads of West Virginia with THE POINT PLEASANT TAPES, a new horror film built around one of America’s most enduring paranormal legends: the Mothman.
WATCH THE TRAILER FOR “THE POINT PLEASANT TAPES” BELOW
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: Set in 1987, the film follows three friends who embark on a road trip to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, hoping to uncover the truth behind reports of the terrifying winged creature. Their investigation takes them into the surrounding forests and forgotten backroads, where they begin finding evidence that suggests the Mothman might be more than a story passed down through local folklore. Years later, the friends’ long-lost videotapes resurface, offering a disturbing look at the events leading up to their mysterious disappearance.
For horror fans who enjoy piecing together clues and questioning what is real, this one looks worth keeping on the radar. The trailer hints at an unsettling blend of folklore, eyewitness accounts and mystery, with a style that should appeal to fans of The Blair Witch Project, Horror in the High Desert and Lake Mungo. The subject matter also brings to mind The Mothman Prophecies, although this time the story unfolds through the supposed recordings of people who went looking for answers and may have found something they were never prepared to face.
The film is directed by Jesse P. Pollack and Dan Jones, the filmmakers behind the true-crime documentary The Acid King. Their involvement adds an interesting wrinkle to a project that leans into the feeling of an investigation gone horribly wrong. Whether you’re a longtime believer in the Mothman legend or simply enjoy horror that plays with the boundary between fact and fiction, the premise has plenty of room for unsettling discoveries.
THE POINT PLEASANT TAPES is scheduled to arrive on November 24 from Wild Eye Releasing. We’ll share more details as they become available.
