With physical media getting more attention thanks to the ongoing debate over digital ownership, we’re bound to see some forgotten film favorites rediscovered, especially the ones that never made the jump to streaming. That’s a good thing, but what happens when the movie you dig out of that old DVD collection comes with some serious baggage? Haunted items are real, folks, and DEAD MEDIA is ready to show ya just how killer they can be.

The upcoming horror film from writer and director Joseph Scrimshaw centers on Maggie, a troubled young woman who settles in for movie night with two friends. Their plans take a turn when Maggie’s superfan uncle arrives with a DVD of a supposedly long-lost 1990s horror cult classic called NIGHT OF THE LURCHERS. As the group digs into the disc, they discover the movie may be more than just an obscure piece of physical media. The DVD is haunted, and before long, elements from NIGHT OF THE LURCHERS begin making their way out of the television and into the real world.

Executive produced by Joe Lynch, whose horror credits include SUITABLE FLESH and MAYHEM, DEAD MEDIA looks like it is having some fun with the physical media obsession while also tapping into something horror fans know very well: sometimes the things we dig up are better left buried.

Before everything became a streaming menu, horror fans could spend an entire evening exploring deleted scenes, commentary tracks, making-of features, and bizarre bonus material. DEAD MEDIA takes that nostalgia and turns it into something far more dangerous.

The film stars Sammi Jack Martinack, Sam Landman, James Urbaniak, Jessica Fenton and Anna Sundberg, with Scrimshaw making his feature directorial debut.

The film is also hitting the road with a series of theatrical screenings, including several California dates. Scrimshaw will be in attendance for the roadshow, with stops scheduled for San Francisco on Sept. 30, Palm Springs on Oct. 2 and Los Angeles on Oct. 17.

Check out the trailer above and keep an eye out for DEAD MEDIA as it makes its way through the theatrical roadshow.
