Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi is heading back into the director’s chair, and this time he’s bringing us something considerably darker. The Grammy-winning musician and filmmaker is making his second feature as a director with Wrong Number, a new horror thriller that Mescudi also wrote and will star in alongside Barbie Ferreira (Faces of Death).
Deadline reports that Wrong Number follows Ibn (Mescudi), a lonely self-help author whose unexpected relationship with a mysterious woman named Eliza (Ferreira) quickly turns into a nightmare. After becoming the target of an unseen stalker and finding himself suspected in a series of murders, Ibn is forced to figure out exactly what is happening before things get even worse.
Mescudi isn’t exactly a stranger to horror. He made his genre debut in Ti West’s X, appearing alongside Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow in the filmmaker’s 2022 slasher. Since then, Cudi has continued moving closer to the genre, and Wrong Number now marks his second horror film following his upcoming directorial debut, Doe. It certainly looks like the guy is getting increasingly comfortable hanging around the dark side.
We dig Cudi here at TrulyDisturbing, and there has always been something about his laid-back, chill presence that makes us curious about what happens when you drop him into a horror movie. He has spent years creating music with a distinct atmosphere and personality, so seeing how that sensibility translates into filmmaking is particularly interesting. Wrong Number also allows him to build a horror story entirely from his own vision, rather than simply stepping into someone else’s.
The cast also includes Lucy Barrett (Deep Water), Dewayne Perkins (The Blackening), Clifton Powell (Ray) and Laura Harrier (Michael). Production is currently underway in Los Angeles.
Mescudi has been open about his longtime love of horror and says he eventually wanted to bring his own stories into the genre. He describes Wrong Number as an original horror thriller and says he is excited by the challenge of directing his second film in such a short period of time.
His first directorial feature, Doe, is an addiction drama that is still awaiting release, meaning Wrong Number represents another major step for Mescudi as he continues expanding his filmmaking career beyond music and acting.
We’ve already seen what Cudi can bring to the horror world as a performer. Now we’re getting a chance to see what happens when he gets behind the camera and calls the shots. Considering the man has been a horror fan for years, we’re curious to see just how strange things get when Kid Cudi finally gets to make the nightmare himself.
