Every year around Halloween, comic books tend to get a little darker. Marvel and DC have both leaned into horror over the years, giving readers stories where familiar heroes are suddenly dealing with zombies, supernatural threats, and worlds that look nothing like the ones they normally inhabit.
Marvel is going considerably further this time.
The publisher has unveiled the MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE, a new horror-focused publishing line that takes some of Marvel’s biggest characters and drops them into stories filled with vampires, mutations, body horror and some seriously disturbing twists. (We let you know back in May about this new universe) The first three books will focus on Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, with all three launching October 7, 2026, just in time for Halloween.
Marvel has also released a new trailer giving fans their first look at what this darker universe has in store.
MIDNIGHT X MEN #1, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Matteo Della Fonte, sends readers into a New York City caught between vampires and mutant empires. A fragile peace is beginning to collapse, and an all out war between the two factions threatens to drag everyone else into the middle of it.
Things get even stranger with MIDNIGHT FANTASTIC FOUR #1, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Kev Walker. The team enters territory that probably should have remained unexplored after an obsessive scientist uncovers secrets buried within the universe. His discovery leaves himself and three others horribly transformed, forcing them to confront whatever exists beyond the dimensions they have uncovered.
Then there is MIDNIGHT SPIDER MAN #1, from Phillip Kennedy Johnson and ScieTronc, which may be the most grotesque of the three.
This version of Peter Parker is a young Spider Man who becomes something far removed from the hero we know. Oscorp transforms him into a grotesque human spider hybrid while searching for a path toward immortality. Once the corporation realizes what Parker’s mutation can unlock, it begins creating additional human animal hybrids. Peter eventually embraces his horrifying new existence and turns his powers against the company responsible.
So yeah, that trailer wasn’t exactly kidding when it promised a darker side of Marvel.
Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski says the new line gave some of the company’s top creators an opportunity to explore the more frightening corners of the Marvel Universe.
The timing certainly feels appropriate.
All three debut issues arrive October 7, 2026, bringing the MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE to comic shops just as Halloween season reaches its peak. Marvel has also revealed covers for the third issues of the series, which are scheduled for December.
For longtime Marvel fans, this looks like a very different way to experience characters we’ve known for decades. For horror fans who don’t normally follow superhero comics, MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE might be a pretty damn good reason to start paying attention.
