Witcher developer CD Projekt Red has decided to go against the grain with the surprise announcement that they are releasing a brand-new story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past.
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt originally released in 2015 and hasn’t received a major expansion since 2016’s Blood and Wine. It’s been a long ten years since then, though fans did get the equally incredible Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020.
CD Projekt Red officially confirmed that Songs of the Past will once again place players in the boots of Geralt of Rivia for a completely new adventure. The expansion is reportedly being co-developed alongside Fool’s Theory, a studio made up of several developers who previously worked on The Witcher franchise. According to reports circulating online and coverage from IGN and other gaming outlets, more information on the expansion is expected to arrive later this summer.
Now CDPR is also deep in development on The Witcher 4, which is expected to showcase Ciri taking the mantle from the legendary Witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Story details on Songs of the Past are currently being kept tightly under wraps, but rumors continue to swirl that the expansion could help bridge the gap between the events of The Wild Hunt and where we eventually find Ciri in The Witcher 4.
What makes this whole thing even wilder is that Songs of the Past will mark the first major Witcher 3 expansion in over a decade. CD Projekt Red has reportedly referred to it as a full expansion rather than simple DLC, suggesting something much larger in scope than a handful of quests or cosmetic add-ons.
Songs of the Past is currently slated to release sometime in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Older consoles reportedly will not be supported this time around.
So, we still have just enough time to dive back into The Wild Hunt for a refresher or, somehow, experience one of the greatest RPGs ever made for the very first time. The Witcher 4 still doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but it is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
