A post graduation road trip takes a terrifying turn in It Ends, an indie horror thriller from writer, director and editor Alexander Ullom. After premiering at SXSW and earning strong early reviews, the film is heading into a wider theatrical release on August 28.
Four friends, Tyler, Day, Fisher and James, set out for what should be a simple road trip. After taking a wrong turn, they find themselves trapped on a strange stretch of highway that appears to have no end. Their car continues running, they never seem to get hungry or tired, and the usual rules of the world begin to disappear.
Getting out of the vehicle isn’t exactly an option, either.
The trailer shows the group encountering a violent mob whenever they venture outside, leaving them with an increasingly terrifying question: Where exactly have they ended up?

Is this some kind of alternate reality? Are they trapped somewhere between life and death? Or is the road leading them toward something they were never supposed to find?
Ullom has described the film as being less concerned with solving its central mystery and more interested in what it feels like to exist inside one. That approach gives It Ends a different flavor from the usual survival-horror setup, allowing uncertainty to become part of the experience.
The film made its debut at SXSW, where it began building attention before its theatrical rollout. It previously played select theaters in New York and Los Angeles and is now set to expand nationwide.
It Ends stars Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, and Mitchell Cole, with Yoon playing James, Jackson as Day, Toth as Fisher, and Cole portraying Tyler.
The early critical response has also been encouraging. It Ends currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 77 reviews, with critics praising its restrained approach and willingness to take its premise somewhere more unexpected.
For an independent horror film built around four people driving down a road that refuses to end, It Ends has already managed to travel considerably farther than its characters.
IT ENDS opens nationwide August 28, 2026.
