Marvel Studios finally revealed Adam Driver‘s role in the new X-Men movie at D23, and we could not have asked for a more interesting choice. Driver will play Mister Sinister, the fan-favorite villain whose real name is Nathaniel Essex, a brilliant geneticist whose obsession with evolution turned him into one of the most twisted scientists in the Marvel universe. The film, directed by Jake Schreier, is scheduled to hit theaters May 5, 2028.
If you’ve watched Driver throughout his career, the casting makes a hell of a lot of sense. He has already shown that he can play intelligent men whose ambition slowly becomes something much darker, whether it was Kylo Ren in STAR WARS, Maurizio Gucci in HOUSE OF GUCCI or Cesar Catilina in MEGALOPOLIS. None of those characters are anything like Essex, but Driver understands how to make intelligence, arrogance and obsession feel dangerous without turning the character into a cartoon.
That is exactly what Mister Sinister needs.
ORIGINS OF EVIL
Nathaniel Essex began as a Victorian era scientist fascinated by Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution. After the death of his son, his interest in genetics became an obsession, eventually leading him to conduct horrific experiments on human subjects. His work attracted the attention of Apocalypse, who transformed Essex into the immortal being who would become Mister Sinister.
And Essex’s history gets considerably darker. During World War II, Sinister worked as a Nazi scientist at Auschwitz alongside geneticist Josef Mengele, a.k.a “The Angel Of Death”, using prisoners for genetic experiments and collecting blood samples from children. Marvel’s own history of the character establishes that connection, making Sinister one of the more disturbing villains in the X-Men mythology.
WHY CYCLOPS AND JEAN
Then there is his obsession with the Summers family, which could become one of the most important elements of the new movie.
Sinister has spent years studying Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, and Jean Grey, with their genetic potential becoming central to his experiments. He manipulated the lives of young Scott and Alex Summers, (HAVOK Of X=FACTOR) monitored their development and became convinced that the genetic combination of Scott and Jean could produce something extraordinary. That obsession eventually led to the creation of Nathan Summers, better known as Cable.
That gives Marvel a villain who has a very personal reason to be interested in the new X-MEN. Kit Connor is playing Cyclops and Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, putting two of Sinister’s most important subjects directly into the story.
WE’VE SEEN HIS NAME BEFORE
Sinister has technically appeared in previous X-Men movies, although fans could be forgiven for barely remembering him. The character was teased in X-Men: APOCALYPSE, where a mysterious figure connected to Essex Corporation was used as a hint toward the villain, but we never received the full version of Nathaniel Essex that comic fans know. Marvel now has the opportunity to finally put the actual character front and center.
And Adam Driver seems tailor made for it.
He can play Essex as a man who genuinely believes he is the smartest person in the room. That is far more interesting than simply giving him a sinister voice and a laboratory full of bubbling chemicals. Essex does not believe he is evil. He believes morality is an obstacle standing between him and scientific discovery, and his centuries of experimentation have convinced him that other people’s lives are acceptable sacrifices if they advance his work.
Give that character to Driver and let him loose in a room with Cyclops and Jean Grey.
Now we have something.
The new X-Men movie has an opportunity to introduce a villain who is frightening because of what he knows, what he has done, and how long he has been manipulating the people around him. Driver has the intensity to sell that arrogance, while Essex’s comic history gives him enough material to become something far more disturbing than another CGI-heavy Marvel villain.
Mister Sinister has been waiting a long time for his proper big screen moment.
Adam Driver might be exactly the guy to give it to him.
