One area of Midsummer Scream that was packed to the gills with fellow fiends was the Universal booth, and for good reason.
The booth was loaded with cool new merchandise tied to Halloween Horror Nights, but one of the biggest treats for classic monster fans was getting our first look at NECA’s upcoming Universal Monsters The Invisible Man Ultimate 7 inch Scale Figure.
Yes, we realize the irony, and no this isn’t John Cena dressed up as the Invisible Man (although that figure does indeed exist from our friends at Mattel).
The Invisible Man was right there in front of us and we could actually see him.
NECA also released a first look at its upcoming Son of Frankenstein Ultimate Frankenstein’s Monster 7 inch Scale Figure through its social media channels, giving collectors another beautifully detailed addition to the company’s growing Universal Monsters collection.
We were able to track down the official press information for both figures, and if you are a Universal Monsters collector, you are probably going to want to make some room on that shelf.
Because NECA doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
Son of Frankenstein Gets the Ultimate Treatment
Inspired by the 1939 classic Son of Frankenstein, the final Universal Monsters film to feature Boris Karloff in his iconic portrayal of Frankenstein’s Monster, NECA’s newest figure brings another version of the legendary creature to its increasingly impressive lineup.
The fully articulated figure stands at 7 inches and features full color decoration, with the Monster dressed in his distinctive sheep wool vest from the film.
Collectors will get two interchangeable heads featuring Karloff’s likeness, along with interchangeable hands and some pretty damn cool accessories.
The figure includes the Fairy Tales book and Inspector Krogh’s prosthetic arm, giving fans the opportunity to recreate some of the film’s memorable moments or simply make their display look considerably more disturbing.
The figure comes packaged in a collector friendly window box with an opening flap, so you can either keep the Monster safely imprisoned in the packaging or let him loose among the rest of your Universal Monsters collection.
We know which option we’d choose.
The Invisible Man Is… Visible
Then there is the Invisible Man.
NECA is taking one of Universal’s most recognizable monsters and giving collectors a figure that is, somewhat inconveniently for the character, completely visible.
The Universal Monsters Ultimate The Invisible, Invisible Man 7 inch Scale Action Figure is based on Dr. Jack Griffin from James Whale’s 1933 classic The Invisible Man.
The fully articulated figure features translucent injected plastic, giving the figure an appropriately strange appearance while playing into the character’s entire gimmick.
The accessories continue the theme, with interchangeable heads, hands and a shirt collar piece included with the figure.
And because apparently a visible Invisible Man wasn’t enough of a contradiction, NECA is also giving the packaging a translucent treatment with a fogged effect.
It is a clever way to represent one of Universal’s strangest monsters while still giving collectors an actual figure to display.
Both figures are currently available for preorder directly through NECA, with additional retailers expected to carry them soon.
After seeing the figures in person at Midsummer Scream, it is pretty clear that NECA is continuing to treat the Universal Monsters property with the kind of attention classic horror collectors have been waiting for.
The company has already produced some seriously impressive versions of Universal’s legendary creatures, and if these latest releases are any indication, the monster shelf isn’t getting any less crowded anytime soon.
And frankly, we’re perfectly OK with that.
