We grew up watching Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, and we still haven’t completely forgiven the movie for making a quiet gathering of crows look suspicious. Now, a new adaptation is in development at HBO, and this time, the nightmare is taking flight in Alaska. If the sight of a few seagulls hanging around your lunch has ever made you nervous, you might want to keep an eye on this one.
Sarah Snook, best known for her role as Shiv Roy in Succession, is attached to star in the planned limited series. Tom Spezialy, whose writing credits include The Leftovers and Watchmen, is developing the project, which takes inspiration from both Hitchcock’s legendary film and the original story by Daphne du Maurier.
From a report at Deadline it seems that the setting and circumstances are changing, but the central idea remains deliciously unsettling. Snook will play Myra Massey, a traveling magistrate who returns to her Alaskan hometown to deal with what initially appears to be a straightforward death investigation. Her homecoming becomes considerably more complicated when the case involves the murder of a childhood friend. Before long, the investigation intersects with a far more frightening problem: birds have begun attacking.

Moving the story to Alaska opens up a different kind of atmosphere for this new version. An isolated community, a suspicious death and an increasingly dangerous natural world give the series several ingredients that could make for some effective slow-burning horror. The question is whether this adaptation can capture the creeping dread that made the original so memorable while building a mystery of its own.
Hitchcock’s The Birds arrived in 1963 and helped cement the idea that ordinary animals could become terrifying cinematic threats. There were no supernatural explanations needed, just familiar creatures behaving in ways people could neither understand nor control. That uncertainty remains one of the film’s most effective tricks.
The new series is in development, so a release date and further casting details have yet to be announced. For now, horror fans have a new reason to be wary of anything with wings.
We’ll be keeping our eyes on the skies and following this one as it develops.
