We’ve had the utmost pleasure watching the Descendents return to full swing over the last few years, and it’s great to see these punk rock legends finding new ways to keep things moving. There was a time in the late ’90s and early 2000s when catching a Descendents show felt like a rare treat. Milo Aukerman‘s academic pursuits, combined with the band’s sporadic recording and touring schedule, meant fans sometimes had to wait a long time between releases and live appearances. Now, the band is bringing even more punk rock fun to the table with a new graphic novel and two exclusive songs.
Descendents: Milo Goes to Comics is coming from Z2, the publisher known for its music-inspired graphic novels. The project follows the band’s journey from childhood friendships in the 1970s to becoming one of the most influential names in punk rock, telling a story that spans nearly five decades of music, mishaps and perseverance.
Written by Descendents members Bill Stevenson and Milo Aukerman alongside author Annie Zaleski, with illustrations by Ryan Dunlavey, the graphic novel offers fans a visual trip through the people and experiences behind the band. Rather than simply recounting a discography, the book explores the winding road that helped shape Descendents and their lasting influence on punk and pop-punk.
Aukerman sounds just as amused by the idea as you’d expect from a band that has always made room for humor alongside its fast, melodic music.
“This comic is WAY more entertaining than reading the Wienerschnitzel coupon page… and better for you too! Seriously though, Annie and Ryan have accurately captured the roller coaster ride of our band history, with many anecdotes never before revealed. I can’t wait for our fans to experience the humor, mishaps, and pathos of the Descendents story, which continues to this day!” Aukerman said.
The book also comes with something music fans will want to hear. The deluxe package includes a 7-inch vinyl featuring two brand-new exclusive Descendents songs, “I Stuck Around” and “Old Power.” The cover art comes from Chris Shary, the longtime artist behind much of the band’s recognizable visual identity.
For a band whose catalog includes Milo Goes to College, I Don’t Want to Grow Up, Everything Sucks and Hypercaffium Spazzinate, the project offers another way to revisit the history behind the music. Descendents helped establish a melodic, irreverent strain of punk that influenced generations of bands, pairing breakneck energy with songs about relationships, anxiety, growing older and everyday frustrations.
Z2 says the book will be available in several editions, including the standard graphic novel, a book-and-vinyl package, and a signed platinum edition bundle. Shipping is scheduled to begin March 22, 2027.
Preorders are available now through Z2 Comics.
Whether you’ve been following Descendents since the early days or discovered them through the bands they helped inspire, Milo Goes to Comics offers a fresh look at a punk rock story that is still being written, with two new songs thrown in for good measure.
