Some records deserve another spin, especially when they bring together musicians responsible for some of punk and horror punk’s most memorable work. Son of Sam‘s “Songs from the Earth” is one of those records, and its upcoming 25th-anniversary vinyl reissue gives fans another opportunity to revisit a project rooted in the dark legacy of Samhain.
Originally released on April 17, 2001, through Nitro Records, “Songs from the Earth” marked the debut album from Son of Sam, a horror punk project assembled by guitarist Todd Youth. The album brought together musicians with direct ties to Samhain and Danzig, with AFI vocalist Davey Havok handling vocals. Now, Craft Recordings is bringing the album back on November 27, 2026, for Record Store Day Black Friday with a limited Orange Crush vinyl pressing.
The name nods to Samhain while also invoking David Berkowitz, the serial killer known as the “Son of Sam” but as you can guess, this was a play on words as being the “SON OF SAMHAIN” so we see why it was used. Davey Havok has come forward in recent interviews saying he didn’t really care for the name but warmed up to it.
For fans who missed the original release, this is another chance to add the record to their collection. For those who have followed Todd Youth’s work over the years, the reissue carries an additional layer of nostalgia. (Youth passed away in 2018).

A Tribute to Samhain With Danzig Himself Involved
Son of Sam wasn’t a band that simply borrowed a horror-inspired name and called it a day. The project grew directly out of Todd Youth’s experiences playing guitar for Danzig and participating in Samhain’s reunion performances.
In a 2018 interview with No Echo, Youth explained that he and Samhain drummer London May began writing songs with a sound reminiscent of Samhain. What initially started as an idea for a seven-inch release eventually grew into a full-length album after Davey Havok became involved and helped connect the project with Nitro Records.
The resulting album was a tribute to Glenn Danzig’s former band, Samhain. Although Songs from the Earth doesn’t contain Samhain cover songs, its roots are unmistakable. Youth and May built the music around that darker punk sound, with Steve Zing joining on bass and Havok contributing vocals.
The connection goes beyond musical inspiration, too. Glenn Danzig himself contributed guitar to “Stray” and guitar and keyboards to the album’s title track. His involvement makes Songs from the Earth a particularly interesting release for listeners who have followed the evolution from Samhain into Danzig.
It’s a project that brings together musicians from different points in that history while allowing them to create something of their own.

The 25th-Anniversary Vinyl Release
Craft Recordings is celebrating the album’s 25th anniversary with a limited-edition pressing for Record Store Day Black Friday on November 27, 2026.
The release is a single LP pressed on Orange Crush colored vinyl, bringing the original album back into circulation for collectors and fans. The announced track listing retains the album’s ten songs, including “Of Power,” “Stray,” “Evernight,” “Songs from the Earth,” “Michael,” and “Invocation.”
The reissue is a welcome opportunity to revisit a record that connects several important names in horror punk and punk rock. Collectors who remember the original Nitro Records release can return to it in a new format, while listeners who discovered Samhain or Danzig years after their initial run have a fresh reason to explore Son of Sam.

Why Songs from the Earth Still Matters
Twenty-five years later, Songs from the Earth remains an interesting chapter in the history of horror punk. Its importance isn’t built around a single name. It’s the result of musicians with shared musical roots coming together for a project that paid tribute to Samhain while creating its own material.
We feel this is the perfect opportunity for this release as the holiday Samhain correlates with November just as much as it does with October. So add this to your spooky season rotation asap.
