We have missed this little bastard.
For years, fans of Trick ’r Treat have been waiting patiently for Sam to crawl back out of the shadows, and now the spirit of Halloween himself is finally making his return. Wrapped in his trademark burlap sack and armed with that unsettling little grin, Sam is back to make sure everyone remembers that Halloween comes with rules, and breaking them can have consequences.
Creator Michael Dougherty is bringing the character back in a big way with Sam: The Soul of Halloween, a new multimedia project dedicated to everyone’s favorite pumpkin headed trickster. The project is giving Sam plenty of room to roam this Halloween season, with new material arriving throughout October.
Fans can follow Sam through his new online home and social media channels, where the project will feature animated shorts, original artwork, merchandise, artist collaborations and other little pieces of Sam’s strange Halloween world.
Dougherty has also brought together a collection of artists who are putting their own spin on the character. That means Sam won’t be confined to one particular artistic style as different creators get the opportunity to interpret the Halloween icon through their own work.
The latest treat arrived with Killing Time with Sam, a new animated short released with 24 days remaining until Halloween. Directed by Dougherty himself, the short finds Sam doing what plenty of us are probably doing right now: impatiently waiting for Halloween to finally get here.
Breehn Burns served as animation director and handled the animation alongside Ye Aung.
For longtime Trick ’r Treat fans, seeing Sam return in any form is a welcome sight. The character has become one of modern horror’s most recognizable Halloween creations, and there is something particularly fitting about bringing him back as the holiday gets closer. Sam doesn’t need a giant movie to remind us why we love him. Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes of animation, a burlap sack and the understanding that Halloween rules are not suggestions.
With Sam: The Soul of Halloween rolling throughout October, there should be plenty more coming from our favorite little guardian of the holiday.
You can keep up with Sam throughout the season through his official website and social channels, where new artwork, animation and other Halloween treats will continue appearing.
