For the past several years Konami has been resurrecting the Silent Hill franchise, but Silent Hill isn’t the only horror series they have buried in the dark tomes of their history. The Castlevania series has been around for well over 40 years at this point. Spawning countless entries across the major consoles from the 1980’s and 90’s to modern hardware.
We have vivid memories of sitting far too close in front of a tube TV as kids, battling Dracula’s evil forces as Simon Belmont in the first Castlevania for the NES. Whipping monsters and mythical beasts as we fight our way to The Count himself. Battling The Grim Reaper seemed like an unsurmountable task at the time, till you had that one friend that stumbled upon the trick of deflecting away his sickles with your whip.
2014 was the last year we had a new mainline Castlevania game, with Lords of Shadow 2. Since then, Konami has done reissues and rereleases of the classic games for modern consoles. Now 12 years later we are finally getting a new game to sink our teeth into, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse.
Set 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Where famous vampire hunter Trevor Belmont managed to fight off Dracula’s forces and defeat the vampire king once and for all… Or so he thought.
The year is 1499 and Paris, France is suddenly engulfed in flames and terrorized by monsters. Trevor Belmont, along with his daughter Rose Belmont, go into the flames to help the citizens and fight the monsters. Soon after, Rose is pulled into the dark and forced to face what lurks behind the darkness. Can she survive and save Paris?
The will be the first 2D mainline title since Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia that was released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS. It was also recently reissued as part of the Dominus Collection for modern consoles
Playing as Rose, you are equipped with the trusty whip, a variety of weapons, and arcane magic. Rose must also tend with Dracula’s Curse, which has affected her right hand.
Looking at the most recent trailer, this looks like the trademark 2D platforming that made the series so iconic is back in full swing and definitely bringing back memories of classic games like Symphony of the Night.
